Shanghai's new composite landmark

Hits: UpdateTime:2012-3-30 13:34:41

The roof of the Theme Pavilion constructed for the Shanghai World Expo depicts the art of paper folding and among environmental benefits, features the world's largest rooftop solar energy system.
It has been successfully created with the help of Aropol G299C resin from Ashland Performance Materials, to produce translucent fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP) roofing panels covering more than 50,000 square metres of surface.
"The building's design, inspired by the paper-folding' technique, makes it one of the landmarks for the World Expo," said Baochang Zhang, commercial director for Ashland Performance Materials Asia. "We are very proud to have supplied our high-performance Aropol resins to help with the successful construction  for this global event."
Aropol G299C resin was used by Kunshan Ampelite Fiberglass Manufacturing to make the roofing panels which feature a light penetration level close to 90%. This attribute allows natural light to illuminate the pavilion during the day, reducing the need for electric lighting.
The roof's solar energy system, meanwhile, can generate 2.8 million kilowatt-hours per year - enough electricity for 2,500 Shanghai families for a year. The electricity generated can reduce carbon dioxide discharges by 2,800 tons.
